Day 8 London

Head off early for the drive to London approx 400 klm. The motorways are enjoyable but busy, weather fine, try to make it to The Mall for the finish. The London ring road is busy and we need to be on the south side as the race is coming in from the north and many roads are closed for the race. We need to have the car back to Gatwick by 2.00pm, which is five minutes from my cousin Bernadette whom we are staying with.

Quick cup of tea with Bernadette drop off baggage and bikes. Warm greeting from Bernadette and neighbour Sandra. Sandra drops us at the station, express train into Victoria Station, walk down to The Mall just in time for the finish.

Large crowds, the parks around the Palace are beautiful. Would love to have spent more time. Next time. No time to waste as Bernadette has a busy schedule for us. First stop for tea at The Jolly Tanners, built in 1684 as a coaching inn. It was on the old London to Brighton road for horse coaches, and was also a popular stop off for King George IV then Prince of Wales. We enjoyed the night although Bernadette gave the food a low score, and felt that the present Prince of Wales would not dine there.
