Day 16 Rest Day-Bourg en Bresse

Stayed the night in Champagney and awoke to a sunny morning. Heading south to Bourg-en-Bresse via Besancon. Stopped off in Belfort which previously belonged to Austria. It is also a large centre for wine and the home of Alstom where the French fast trains were produced TGV.
Belfort

Time to send my second batch of post cards to the grandchildren, so I entered the PO to purchase stamps and handed the assistant a number of post cards and she counted quatre (four), my school bot French came to the fore, as I bodly said pas cinq (no five), oui, merci monsieur. I was really coming to grips with this language thing now. Alas it didn't last long when Peter asked for a sim card for the phone. A kind young Polish man assisted in the purchase.

About 250klm later reached the end of the Autoroute, (Freeway) near Bourg-en-Bresse, preparing to hand over some loose coins as we knew some of the roads in France were toll roads. We had approx nine euros in coin and twenty euros in notes. Expecting to part with 5-6 euro we were stunned when the attendant said thirty three euro. As we were intending to draw out some cash in town we were unable to hand over the cash. okay lets try our visa card.....reject....lets try mastercard........reject......lets try any card.........reject. It will not accept overseas visa or mastercard only French ones. What are we going to do! Traffic is building behind, pressure levels rising, cars honking. Thank goodness we had German number plates, and I wasn't getting out of the van to tell them I was English. They eventually took our passport details and car rental details and we had to go online and pay within eight days. Anyone going to France and travelling on their toll roads contact Peter or myself because it is pretty challenging for new arrivls with the variety of booths and how it all works.
