Day 11 Mechernich Aachen

Today we are off to Aachen a vibrant regional centre that sometimes belonged to France and then back to Germany.

The cathedral dates back to 800 AD, one of the most unusual yet distinctive styles that I have seen.

The most significant and important character of this region was Karl Charlemagne born in 748 AD and died In 814 AD.Karl was a ruler of the kingdom which stretched from present day western France to Hessen.
The Big Chair

The throne for all the German kings is located here. Karl was not only an emperor but later made a saint. Interesting! Travelled on the Autobahn Erik sitting on 160klm just a small VW yet some cars are flying past. Theo says 130klm is good for speed and economy.
