Day 15 Bastille Day La Planche des Belles Filles

The rain had stopped but was still threatening. Whilst having breakfast there was a knock on the door. Monsieur excuse moi!............ we got the message clear off! Moved the van to a car park just outside a camp site. Things are much easier to find in the day light. we were preparing our bikes for the ride to the top of the mountain finish and I heard two guys riding their bikes also talking in English as they were heading to the top. As my French yesterday was ordinary I thought I would practice my English on these two.

Paul & son George (From Rugby) are regular riders both in England and Europe. They provided us with invaluable information and how the tour works, where to go, locations etc. Peter and myself head for the hills and passing through a number of villages, parties were evident, pigs on spits, children letting of fireworks.(Oohh those memories of fireworks and penny bangers in cow dung. We lived in the country)
on the way to La Planche

The rain was on and off all the way to the top and the crowds were big. We decided to ride back to a drier spot and improved vantage point to watch the race.  A key junction point, good crowd, weather cleared and the sun came out.The French a little better with the assistance of Danes, Dutch and Germans. Aah! the camaraderie of international sporting events, generosity, humour, patience etc. when you have a common interest.

Met up with Paul & George and ride back to base. George is an up and coming young English rider (17 years) who recently competed and finished second in a competition up Alpe d' Huez in 40 mins. Wow! Paul & George Goodwin thanks for the company and hopefully will see you in Oz one day.
