Day 10 Mechernich

Early start, greatly appreciate Bernadette, and her hospitality. Just over an hours flight to Koln, the rain has set in. Great to be in Germany, particularly after they beat Brasil 7-1. Everyone in high spirits. Lovely greeting from Stefanie and Erik who have kindly picked us up and take us to Kerpen to collect the motorhome. Travel to Mechernich which is in the Eifel region near the borders of Netherlands and Belgium. The villages in this part of Germany are something to see.

They have booked Peter and myself into a hotel.

After unloading the baggage we have a quick orientation around the village. First stop we have been booked into a personal tour of a lead mine. This forms an intricate part of the regions history. No longer in production but in it's time produced 15,000 tonnes per one million tonnes of rock. Also used during the war as a shelter and hospital for the local community. Extensive range of tunnels. Thanks to Ralf our tour guide also a regular bike enthusiast, so conversation continually deviated off course. The Germans grasp of english continues to amaze me, we feel a bit embarrassed by our lack of language skills. A great family meal with Stefanie, Theo (pronounced tee ho) kirsten (pronounced key-L-ston) I hope thats okay Kirsten, and Jens, Erik and Stephan. Stefanie, Erik and Stephan visited Australia in 2008 so it was great to be with them again.
